TOXICITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINAL PRODUCTS CONTAINING FLUNIXIN MEGLUMINE ON SCAVENGERS
Recently, the EU regulatory network was informed about some publications referring to intoxication of vultures by flunixin meglumine that was detected in several birds fed with carcasses of animals treated with these VMPs. A tailored risk assessment was conducted by an EU national competent authority concluding that the evidences available advised the implementation of risk management measures for VMPs containing flunixin.
In this context, and together with some other proper measures of control systems (as continued surveillance, sampling of carcasses in feeding sites, veterinarians control in the application of the drugs for the proper use), several mitigation measures are needed in order to minimize the risk of these cases.
In the framework of the CMDv, MAHs of veterinary medicinal products containing flunixin meglumine will be asked to apply for a variation not requiring assessment to update the product information of these veterinary medicinal products.
